Mortal Kombat Armageddon is the end of the current MK Storyline involving guys like Scorpion, Liu Kang, etc. A lot of characters will be killed off and the game will be built from scratch for the PS3, 360, and most likely Wii even though they're getting Armageddon in January. If you like I'd be more than happy to post a link or two.

**Quick MK Summary**
Mortal Kombat-
A 2,000 year old half human dragon Goro remains undefeated for the past 500 years. He won the title of grand champion by defeating Kung Lao, a shaolin fighting monk. It was during this period that the tournament fell into Shang Tsung's hands and was corrupted.
The day is saved when Lao's decsendant(sp) Liu Kang defeats both Goro and Shang Tsung. There are other notable rivalries in the game as well. The most popular IIRC is Sub-Zero vs Scorpion
Mortal Kombat II
500 years ago, Shang Tsung was banished to the Earth Realm. With the aid of Goro he was to unbalance the furies and doom the planet to a chaotic existence.
By seizing control of the shaolin tournament he tried to tip the scales of order towards chaos. Only seven warriors survived the battles and Shang Tsung's scheme would come to a violent end at the hands of Liu Kang.
Facing execution for his failure and the apparent death of Goro, Tsung convinces Shao Kahn to grant him a second chance..
Shang Tsung's new plan is to lure his enemies to compete in the Outworld where they will meet certain death by Shao Kahn himself.
In this game several new characters are introduced including new boss Shao Kahn and Kintaro a badder, stronger version of Goro.
I'm not sure who came out on top in this one. Many people presume Jax won the tournament because he saved Sonya Blade who was captured.
Mortal Kombat 3-
This one is sort of the dark MK. Earthrealm has lost and it's now taken over by Shao Kahn with the aid of other baddies such as Shang Tsung, Kano, and Sindel his queen. This is also considered one to be IMO one of the worst MK games ever. They added an unneeded run button amongst other things. Liu Kang I believe was confirmed to be the winner of this tournament giving him two victories in the MK Universe
MK Trilogy-
Nothing more than a wrapup of the Shao Kahn events and leading up to the events of Mortal Kombat 4. It also introduced new ways to finish off your opponent. The most popular was the brutality.
Mortal Kombat 4
Thousands of years ago in a battle with the fallen elder god known as Shinnok, I was responsible for the death of an entire civilization. To rid all realms of Shinnok's menace I waged a war that plunged the earth into centuries of darkness and banished Shinnok to a place called the Netherealm. Now after Shao Kahn's defeat at the hands of the earth warriors, Shinnok has managed to escape his confines of the Netherealm. The war is now being fought once again, and this time it can be won by mortals.
The fourth installment of MK did away with Motion Capture and attempted to be a full 3D MK Game. However the game was half assed and the weapon kombat wasnt all that great either. This one tops MK 3 as the worst MK game ever. MK Gold was later released for Dreamcast and like Trilogy didnt do much but clean up plot holes and whatnot
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance
MK: DA brings the franchise back from the dead complete with an almost new cast of characters. This one tells the story of Quan Chi and Shang Tsung's dominance as a team. This game rocked the foundation of the MK Universe when Tsung and Chi were able to rid themselves of the two people who posed the biggest threat to their plan. Shao Kahn and Liu Kang. Kahn was beaten badly but managed to survive Kang however had his neck snapped and soul consumed by Tsung.
New character Li Mei was presumed the winner of the tournament but it was only a scam as they used her soul and many others to ressurect the Dragon King's army. Tsung and Chi would not be successful in their plan however as the Dragon King would soon be ressurected by using the body of Reptile as it's host or something like that.
Mortal Kombat Deception
This one talks about a Warrior named Shujinko. He was responsible for the resurrection of the Dragon King and didnt know it until it was too late(cliche I know) Shujinko was supposed to replace Liu Kang as the earthrealms's newest hero but I don't think the fans cared much for him so Kang was brought back as an animated corpse. Nobody knows for sure who came out on top in this one seeing that Deception brought about a lot of theories on who really won the tournament which brings me to...
Mortal Kombat Armageddon
This is it. A lot of people will be killed off in this game to make way for a new batch of characters for the Next Generation of Kombat which presumably will begin on PS3, 360 and Wii. Much like DA, Deception, and Armageddon it'll be build from the ground up to take advantage of each console's strengths.
