Yeah, if you know my, you know my "unhealthy" obsession with shiny pokemon. I'm kinda tired right now, but I'll put an FAQ up sometime tomorrow(it's late where I live). If you have any questions concerning shiny pokemon, I'll post them.
I have 4 shiny pokemon, a Charizard, a Rayquaza, an Eevee, and a Pelipper.
when i'm choosing the starter in firered, will the picture of it be shiny, letting you know it is one, or do i have to actually choose it and check the summary?

Goatmann, how exactly did you get your shiny pokemon? I got all of mine except for Pelipper through soft resetting. And I'm currently soft resetting for a shiny Groudon and a shiny Lapras, wish me luck.
Soft resetting is the process of pressing A, B, Start, and Select all at the same time to reset the game. It is faster than turning the on and off switch, and it is less negative side effects(if you turn the off and on button enough, you can get blisters, whereas soft resetting, you'll just be kinda sore). It is usually used for getting legendaries and other pokemon you can save in front of with good natures, or, in my case, getting shiny pokemon.
I get all my shinys through action replay. I have many shinys like shiny charizard, kabutops, articuno, venasaur, and many others. I'm waiting to get my emerald version and 2 wireless adapters so i can get shiny groudon, kyogre, rayquaza, deoxys and other cool looking shiny pokemons. I can't use my main fire red for the shiny codes because it freezes when you check in your box and i can't afford to mlose all pokemon i have caught and used rare candys on cause it takes awhile. Emerald is good cause you can use the shiny code and not get frozen or stuck. i know since i played on my friends and he let me test it.
