I know this thread sounds weird but here me out. Whenever you train for a Gym Battle, the Elite 4 or a Battle for a Friend, how seriously do you take it? Not HOW do you train (I have a thread on that already, check out my profile and find it!) but how seriously. Do you match your levels with there's, go higher or feel very confident and go under theirs? In the early Gyms against Brock say, do you even raise your Beedrill's and Rattata's to level 10, do you train just Bulbasaur/Squirtle or do you level up the things you know you'll actually use now or later on (Like Pika, even though he won't be used).
Early on I may raise up a few other things but not quite as high and the things I'll use I level up properly (near enough same level/higher). Early on I usually get lots of things that are good, for Roxanne you could have Lombre, Marill and a Wingull say. Later on when my squad develops and gets more varied, I then make sure levels are similar so that in case the Pokémon I intend to use faints, I have a bit of back up.
As always I look forward to your thoughts.
I'm always 10 levels ahead of the leader's strongest Pokémon.
Finished FireRed's league with all Pokémon at 75+.
Mine are equal to gyms strongest...I win and beat Elite with like lvl 57 maybe..been a while
I used to catch and raise Pokemon as I went, but now I only catch and train the ones that I'm going to be using. My general plan is to have my whole team at level 50 by the time I get to the Elite Four.
Right now very seriously...type matchups are a specialty of mine...then...I took it for granted...so...yeah.
I have a kind of training schedule. For the first gym leader I have my starter at level 15 and the rest of my team at level 10 even though I don't use half of them. It just makes for a balanced team. For every gym after, I train ALL POKEMON 5 levels, so my starter is always 5 levels ahead of everyone else. If I get a new Poke, I train it to the levels of all the others before using it in any gym battles. Then, for the League, I train all Pokes 10 levels, so I start the league with my starter at 60 and others at 55. Before I battle a gym leader, if all Pokes are at the right level, but evolve in 1 or 2 levels, then I'll evolve them before taking on the gym. This way of training works really surprisingly well, and it's quite easy. If you can never seem to train enough, you should try it.
I basically just train as I go. The only time I train in the wild is before I battle my rival in R/S/E. Then if they aren't strong enough to beat the Elite Four, I just keep going through until I win. Stubborn, aren't I? ;p
I use strategy, so around 20 levels lower than my opponent. No-one in-game has any strategy, so you can tear them apart. One of my friend's is shocking and uses ubers, so I have to be same level for that...
I usually see what Pokemon they have and then get a pokemon that string against those types. I train that pokemon up plus others and away I go. I don't really train specifically for a gym battle - whatever level I'm on I'm just on it.

when I was playing pokemon Sapphire I was a training freak-I was determined to train my pokemon 15 levels higher than their strongest pokemon-so for the first gymbadge Iwas like lvl 25,at the league I was lvl 75+,Now I train not as much-only about 10+levles per gym badge
