Ash sat at the table in Prof. Oak's lab, bored, hoping he would get done soon. Misty looked over at him and saw the look of utter boredom settled upon his usually goofy brow. "Oh, c'mon Ash, he'll be done soon. Just get that stupid look off of your face before you start drooling on those notebooks." Ash looked up, then threw himself on the back of his chair. "I can't help it! It's just one measly poke'ball that needs fixing!" he said loudly. "Well he's an expert, so his actions have to be precise and that usually takes time." Brock said, looking up from brushing Vulpix. Ash looked back down and at the notebooks. They were large and papers were sticking out of all of them, many had words and pictures sticking out of the edges. "I wonder what he's writing about. . . "Ash said while picking up a notebook. A small sketch fluttered out from in between the pages. It showed a small bird-like pokemon, mostly yellow and resembled a Moltres. Ash didn't bother to notice it and continued looking through the notebook, as he read on his bored expression molded itself into one of shock and a strike of horror or disgust. "What're you reading?" Misty said taking the notebook from him. "Hey! Give that back, I was being entertained!" Misty smirked and read it too; her expression changed too, but one of mystery and wonder. "After further study it is confirmed that Crystal is a . . . half breed.'" Misty read the passage from the notebook in a slow voice, Brock looked up at the girl’s name. "So there's a girl here?!" he said in a perverted manner. "Ewww, is that ALL you ever think about, Brock!?" Misty said giving a disgusted look. Brock slowly shook his head in a satisfied manner.
Ash and Misty read the notebook as long as possible until they heard the approaching footsteps of Prof. Oak. "What are you two reading?" he asked casually. Misty panicked and threw the book on the table. "Nothing, nothing at all!" Ash said in an excited voice. Prof. Oak raised an eyebrow. "Okay well your poke'ball is ready, that was quite a crack it had in it; what did it hit?"
"Half-" Ash started.
"Half of Brock's Geodude!"
Prof. Oak didn't look satisfied with their answer. "You've read my notebook haven't you?" he asked in a peeved voice. Ash froze where he sat. "We're so sorry Prof. Oak! It was Ash's idea and we were all so bored!" Misty said frantically. Brock looked up again, "You guys were, don’t drag me into this!" Prof. Oak sighed. "Well, now you know about Crystal." he said plainly. "Is she here, at the lab?" Ash asked. Prof. Oak nodded and walked to the back again. Some talk was heard and finally a pajama clad girl walked out of a room. Her hair was pale blue and matched the weird symbol on her forehead, even though she had more than one. As she came closer Ash and the others noticed the red and yellow ones surrounding the blue symbol, along with a yellow and orange one that was in a splash pattern under her left eye and a beep blue stripe under her right one. She raised a non-existent eyebrow at the trio and proceeded to coffee. Prof. Oak stayed behind and explained who she was. "This is Crystal, and as you read in my notebook she's not all human."
"What does that mean?"
"Well, I'll tell you my story about how I found her."
Ash groaned in an annoyed manner. As is there was something else to do.
"Ahem, well one day I was trimming my garden when I noticed a small red light from under some bushes. I looked in there out of curiosity and saw this yellow bird pokemon sleeping in there. It was badly injured from small cuts that I had suspected to be from Team Rocket, but I picked her up and brought her inside. After a night’s sleep and some medical attention I left her in a guest room. In the mourning I came into the room and saw that there wasn't a little pokemon there anymore, but a girl about your age Misty! I was worried and asked who she was and learned about this weird predicament. So far I've kept her here for observations and have seen incredible things! Apparently the pokemon she was when I found her was a baby Moltres!"
"Wow! Can she turn into other things?" Misty asked with an interested smile.
"Yes indeed! She told me that she was a baby pokemon because she was so weak, and my suspicions were correct. Crystal recollected men in black with large red 'R's' on their clothes. But other than that she has no memory besides her name and just recently."
Brock gave a soft 'wow' and Ash stared back at the girl. "You might want to be careful though, she's angry without caffeine." But it was too late; Ash had gone up to her to innocently ask a question. "What the heck do you want?" she asked sourly. "Hey! I haven't done anything to you!"
"Oh well, I don't trust strangers and I'm not a mourning person, so get away before I hurt you." Ash growled some. He tried to run up to Crystal, but her hand was to fast, and Ash, instead, ran into a fist.
"Don't underestimate me." she said simply, and walked to the main rooms couch to drink her coffee in peace. "I like this girl!" Misty said with a laugh.
After several hours of watching Crystal lay on the couch lethargically Ash finally got up the courage to talk again. "You!" he pointed to her with an angered look, "Why did you punch me!" she gave a small cough and started blankly back at him. "I hit you because you ran at me, and I'm not a mourning person."
"Well it's been several hours so is it still mourning to you?"
Crystal checked the clock, closed her eyes in thought, and finally replied. "Yes, so what do you want that's so important?"
"I want to battle you!"
Crystal laughed so hard the coffee she had been drinking quickly came out of her nose. "YOU!?" she yelled as the coffee slowly dribbled out. "You're talking about battling an angry person who can transform into nearly ANY pokemon she wants! Do you seriously think you would win?"
"Well erm. . . you said you can't transform into EVERY pokemon, so which ones can't you transform into, eh!?"
Crystal sipped her coffee, "The ones that are always male."
" . . . "
With an evil snicker Crystal impersonated a Jynx on the way to her room. Misty pulled Brock back by the hair and nearly tied him up with duct tape as they awaited her return. "SHE WAS BECKONING TO MEEE!" Brock said in sorrow.
"I don't care! You don't just run after a girl who's about to battle! Especially when she's going to change, pervert."
"You saw the way she was walking!"
"It was probably to distract Ash, and judging by the silence I think it worked."
Misty was partially correct, it was to distract Ash but Ash wasn't distracted. He was annoyed deeply about Crystal's ability and aimed to take her down no matter what. Crystal reemerged wearing a jacket with large cross stitches and a black shirt under it. It was overly colorful and was composed of a peacock green with black trim. On her legs hung a hybrid of pants and a long dress, each side embroidered with a Moltres or an Articuno. "Well? Are you just going to gawk like an r-tard, or are you going to battle me like a bigger r-tard?" she said in a sneering tone. Ash growled again. "I'm waiting." she said again in a sing-song voice. Finally Ash leaped over the counter and ran out the door, signaling that the battle had started. Crystal followed after him, not wanting to miss a beat.
"Okay. . . since she can transform she'll change into whatever pokemon I throw out. Gah! Darn it. . . " Ash said to himself. He looked down at the pokemon he had intended to use, thank goodness it was still inside its poke'ball. Crystal walked smoothly outside, she tilted her head upwards slightly. "Well?" she asked. Ash narrowed his eyebrows, "You go first!" he yelled back at her. Crystal's nonexistent eyebrows rose in minor surprise. Her eyes closed and a calm look came upon her face; light enclosed her body and grew larger. At last the light was gone and a large Tyranitar was facing Ash with the same sneer Crystal had given him. "Grr. . . SQUIRTLE I CHOOSE YOU!" Ash sent out the small turtle pokemon against his rock hard opponent. The Tyranitar shrunk in size as it performed a swagger attack. Ash laughed whole heartedly, "You know that powers up MY pokemon!" he said boastingly. Tyranitar Crystal gave another 'you're an idiot' look and near immediately took advantage of the confused Squirtle for a take down attack. Suddenly a loud beeping came from the Tyranitar, Ash laughed. "Is that your mom calling you?" he yelled so Crystal could hear it. She changed back in a similar burst of light; her eyes quickly grew moist, and in a burst of energy she ran back into the lab.
"What was that about?" Ash asked himself as he too entered the lab. "What'd you do to her?!" Misty yelled to Ash.
"What? I heard some beeping and asked if her mom was calling her!" Prof. Oak sighed as Misty grew a bit angrier. "Weren't you listening earlier? I told you that she doesn't remember anything about her past. . . So making a comment about her mom upset her greatly, Ash."
"YEAH!" Brock shook his head in a bit of disgust and walked back into the room where Crystal had fled. He saw the curled up mass under her covers and an odd beeping accompanied it. "Are you okay, Crystal?" she sniffled in reply and pulled the covers in more. Brock slowly walked and sat down on the corner of her bed. "Don't worry, we'll bound and gag Ash tonight for your entertainment purposes." he said jokingly. Crystal remained silent and the beeping continued. Brock placed a calm hand on her side; Crystal pulled the covers off of her head and looked up at Brock. "Really?" she asked in a creaky voice. Brock gave a small laugh, "Sure. Now let’s get rid of that sad face." he held out a handkerchief for Crystal to clean herself up. "So, what was that beeping Ash and I heard?" Crystal blew her nose one more time before replying. "It was my Tamagotchi. . . " She held up a pale blue virtual pet that matched her hair. "It was hungry and wanted attention. . . "Her turquoise eyes looked up at him. Brock quickly stood up and offered to help Crystal off of her bed. "C'mon I'll go help with lunch and you can talk to Misty about adorable things!" Crystal giggled and got up.
As Brock walked back into the main room with his little 'shadow' Ash immediately started asking questions, only to get hit by Misty to the delight of Togepi. "So what kind of pokemon do you have Crystal?" Misty asked while putting Togepi on the ground to play with Pikachu. "Hold on, I've got mainly birds but a few water pokemon!"
"How’d you know that I liked water pokemon?"
"I'm psycho?" Crystal shrugged and let out four pokemon. Lined up were a Ralts, Meowth, Pidgey, and a yellowish-golden bird that had a small flame on its head. Crystal picked up the fiery little bird and snuggled it immensely. "What pokemon is that?" Misty asked while staring the little bird. "Well. . . I call her Mini-tres!"
"So, it's a baby Moltres?"
Crystal nodded and continued cuddling the little pokemon. After that she picked up the others and set them on her lap. Crystal and Misty talked for a long while about whatever popped into their mind (but it was mostly cute pokemon and boys). Finally Brock yelled from the kitchen that lunch was ready.
"So, are you going to talk to me again?" Ash asked after eating a good portion of his noodles. Crystal gave a sour look over at him and quickly kicked him in the shin. "Maybe." she replied solemnly.
