Well, I know exactly what they're for, but cannot tell you everything.
Basically, a team is like a clan.
There are 4 teams, as follows:
Rocket
Aqua
Magma
Galactic
Those are the teams in the Pokémon games.
All I can saw, is that once you get 50 posts, registering in a team will make your time here more enjoyable.
Many activities will be done with the teams, and one is getting ready to start.

Basically they are just sides and you choose one.
