I've noticed this new section, which quite frankly, I had no idea we were getting. Anyhow, I wrote this short guide to breeding this morning. And I've decided it'd be beneficial to put here.

Generally, you get a Male Pokémon and a Female Pokémon and place them in the daycare centre, the Egg will always produce whatever the female is. However, you cannot just breed any 2 Pokémon, each Pokémon is placed into one or 2 Egg groups, these mean that you can only breed certain Pokémon with each other. There are 4 kidns of pairings you can breed, these are: a Pokémon and Ditto, a Pokémon and another one of the same Pokémon, a Pokémon and it's (pre-) evolution or a Pokémon and something else from its Egg Group. If you want to know the groups to check cross-species breeding, check out this awesome, colourful and printable table, by clicking this sentence!

The times it takes to breed a baby are variable (the number of steps before an egg is produced), with the amount of steps to hatch the egg being variable on the Pokémon. But breeding is useful because 3 random Individual Values (IVs) are passed down from a random parent, with the other 3 being random. From Emerald onwards, a Female Parent or Ditto holding an Everstone makes the baby have a 50% chance of inheriting that parent's nature.

Sometimes breeding is strange, as these pairs of Pokémon where the egg could hatch into the Male OR Female's species, these are:
  • Tauros and Miltank
  • The Nidorans
  • Illumise and Volbeat
Also, some Pokémon can only produce certain other Pokémon if they're holding a certain item. These are Pokémon like Wobbuffet, Marill/Azumarill and so on, who only when holding a Lax/Sea Incense, do they produce a baby Wynau/Azurill, otherwise you'll just get more Wobbuffet/Marill. Other examples include Roselia, Chimecho, Sudowoodo and so on.

Now, the rules of thumb for passing on moves are as follows:
+ Any TMs the Father knows that the Baby knows will be passed on to the baby.
+ Any Egg moves (you'll have to check a Pokédex, but these are moves the Baby doesn't normally learn when levelling up but can only know through breeding) the father has the child has.
+ If BOTH the father AND mother have a move that the baby knows when levelling up normally, then the Baby will know it.

My classic example is showing this:
+ Male Venusaur (Razor Leaf, Vine Whip, Solarbeam, Tackle) and Female Meganium (Razor Leaf, Poisonpowder, Light Screen and Synthesis)
+ The result is a Lv5 Chikorita with:
- Razor Leaf (a natural move they BOTH knew)
- Solarbeam (a TM from the father)
- Vine Whip (one of Chikorita's Egg moves, how else did it know it in the animé all the time?)
- Growl (a regular move it has at Lv5, Tackle was replaced because there were 3 interferring moves).

Notice that Light Screen isn't there, some people think Females can pass on TMs but they cannot, whatsoever. And also notice Synthesis isn't, because both Pokémon don't have the move. Furthermore, nearly all Pokémon can breed with Ditto, only a minority can't (called the No Eggs Group) and they always produce the non-Ditto baby, so this is a way of reproducing males without having to catch or obtain another of that species that is Male. Furthermore, the same rules do apply with move passing on, obviously you cannot really get both knowing the same move with Ditto (though in DP I believe you can now with a special after battle affect) but if the Non-Ditto is Male, all TMs and Egg Moves it may know are passed on. If they are Female, they are not.

So that's all I got for a minute. If you want to know more about what moves you can breed on, check the thread in my sig. I haven't got DP yet, so I will update and add more once I get it and anything I feel I may have missed, such as Pokémon on that Table!
I would learn how to breed from you!THANKS FROM INFERNAPE!
I am a breeder a good one to!
Okay but you '2' are spamming. Please just comment about the guide and.or things to add, don't make this a bragging thread about yourselves. Thanks!
That's a good guide, Beau.

And the attachment's really pretty ^^

It's good for people to know this stuff so they can understand the basics of breeding if they want to pass on a particular Egg/TM move.

Excellent guide, very informational.

But, I just breeded a Wigglytuff and a skitty, and the igglybuff had rain dance and sunny day, wth? I don't understand that.
Hey A.F.I, your Igglybuff got egg moves from skitty, I think. Did your Skitty know Rain Dance and Sunny Day?
Ok guys, mind if I chip in with my 2p?

Tricks on hatching Eggs

This is something interesting I found out. There are abilties that hatch Pokémon eggs faster, these abilities are held primarily by Fire type Pokemon and are as follows:

Magma Armour
Slugma
Magcargo
Camerupt

Flame Body
Magmar
Slugma
Magcargo
Magby

(note: not included D/P Pokémon because all other Fire types have Blaze or Flash Fire or Pressure as their ability - Flash Fire does NOT have the same effect)

Now, there's a twist to this particular bit of info. I'm gonna use Eevee as my example.

The Pokémon in question mut be NEXT TO THE EGGS in the Pokémon List for this ability to take effect.

For example, Eevee takes 8,960 steps to hatch. The Magma Armor ability of my Camerupt (cunningly nicknamed Big Mama) ensures that the Egg should hatch in half the time.
4480 steps, right?

WRONG! My Pokémon Egg took 5,300 steps to hatch! Why is this?

Because in the Pokémon List, there was another Egg inbetween my Camerupt and the Eevee Egg!
Pokémon List
Duskull
Garchomp
Toxicroak
Camerupt
Other Egg
Eevee Egg

Now, if the list had been sorted so that it was Camerupt, Eevee Egg, Other Egg, then Eevee would indeed have hatched in half the time. I walked 820 steps, the Other Egg hatched and I dumped it in the PC, which means the Eevee Egg was, by default, directly next to Camerupt on the list. NOW it takes half the time. Or so I think anyway.
Not sure if this is spam but what do i breed with my female ralts to get a male ralts?
You have to breed with anything in Ralts egg group that's male.
