Brilliant Diamond & Shining pearl are often referred to as the worst remakes of the series, but how does this happen?
I have a pretty good idea based on the Tera leak from 2025. (It's safe to keep reading, I am not going into any spoilers for future games or anything TPCi wouldn't want you to know)
From everything we know Legends Arceus started development BEFORE BDSP in 2018.
Brilliant diamond & Shining Pearl started development in Q1 2020.
Gamefreak didn't want to remake gen 4. Instead, they had bigger ideas & wanted to do something different. It's all a mind set shift. Legends Arceus IS the gen 4 remake.
From dialogue in the teraleak from internal meetings, they've mentioned they don't feel an obligation to remake every game.
I think Legends Arceus was always the goal, but they changed their mind later thinking fans would be disappointed if they didn't get Diamond & Pearl as well. So they outsourced it. BDSP also has the shortest dev time of any pokemon game at roughly a year and a half and they also came in HOT with a lot of fixes needed post release.
Instead of being upset about BDSP, I would look at Legends Arceus as the gen 4 remake, because it is. & BDSP is kind of a bit of a dessert after you've had your main course.
Curious if anyone agrees or disagrees with me.
I don't believe we're ever getting an XY remake due to ZA and if we do, it's at least 10 years away.
Note: I don't have any sources and I don't feel comfortable linking tera leak items, but you have to trust that what I am saying is true. I believe it is to the best of my ability. :)
