This is why I believe Pokémon is done with remakes. I'm not saying they'll never remake games, I'm just saying why they're done for now.
Prior to the transition to 3D, Pokémon games were pretty easy to develop and had small teams. When we got a remake, it just mimicked the style of the current generation because it was easy to do.
Something interesting was said during a developer interview when Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire were coming out. (I don't have a link to this, you'll just have to trust me.) Ohmori said they chose to remake Ruby & Sapphire due to fan demand. This read to me like they didn't feel like they absolutely had to do another remake, they just did it because they felt people wanted it.
Then came time to do Diamond and Pearl on Switch, which further pushed this idea. If you've read the leaked internal docs from two years ago, you know Game Freak didn't want to remake Diamond & Pearl. Legends: Arceus WAS the remake. But they later backtracked and remade Diamond and Pearl because they felt people would be disappointed if they didn't, so they outsourced it, and then people complained due to it being a faithful remake and the chibi art style.
With Pokémon games taking longer to make and requiring more time, resources, and people, it seems to me like they're just not interested in remaking a game to look "modern." If they're going to remake a game, they'd rather do a new experience like Arceus or ZA. Like, I don't think we're getting an XY remake. Legends: Z-A IS the revisit, and I would never expect a Black and White remake to ever come with a modern free roam art style.
